Also, discuss the disturbing trend in the African American community towards higher unemployment. According to recent statistics, "the African American unemployment rate increased from 15.5 to 15.8 percent" (Malveaux). Why do you think African American unemployment is on the rise despite the political changes that have occurred with the election of President Barack Obama?
Please read the following article and comment on the statistics.
What conclusions can you draw? Is the increased unemployment in the African American community a result of discrimination in American society? Can we really live in a "postracial society" with such an income gap between African Americans and other ethnicities?
The unemployment rate is falling for the third months in a row. Because doing the third months were holiday in it. And store were just give people jobs for that time and after December they let them go because they don’t need them no more. That is why the unemployment rate went up 3 percent.
ReplyDeleteAmerica is not a post-racial society, due to the facts of certain prejudices that still occur today. Having President Obama, in office, has changed America's view on, "if its even possible to have another race than white", for the main figure head of our country. This may ultimately be a stepping stone not only for the African american community but also a stepping stone for other cultures, to become the first president that is of that origin. Maybe this may lead up to a day of being a "more" post racial society. But Racism will always be some sort of aspect of any culture as long as there is an idea of it, and people willing to die for those ideas...
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is half and half. The recession is not only affecting the African American culture it is affecting all. I think that many caucasians have a better chance of gaining employment than any other race. It is difficult for African Americans to get employed, and the statistics show. Do I think we live in in a post-racial America? Yes I believe so there was a time when we couldn't even sit in a diner with the the caucasian race.
ReplyDeleteThere is still racism and prejudice in the world today so having a black president didn't make that issue any better.
ReplyDeleteThe state of the economy isn't Obama's fault but he gets blamed for the way things are and blamed for not making things better for the short time he has been president. The state of the economy affects everybody not just blacks but it does seem that it affects low income blacks more negatively than anyone else.
The article posted above draws me to the conclusion that, yes racism and gender discrimination is still prevalent. Being an African American woman, we in a way have a double minority label. We are women, and we are African Americans. Women in society today, do not experience a lot of the struggles that women in the past have, but some discrimination still exists. This discrimination is especially seen in this article towards African American women. We have to work twice as hard at everything to receive what is already rightfully ours.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what the conditions are there will always be prejudice in the United States of America. A mind is a powerful thing and it takes more than a black elected president to persuade one certain race to do something, or the entire population in general.
ReplyDeleteI think there will always be prejudice in the United States of America. I dont think its Obama's fault but of course he is going to get the blame for it because he is the Black President and everyone expecting him to do things right away. The recession is defintely effecting the African American society.
